Singapore Tourist Map Guide Officially

Officially known as the Republic of Singapore, Singapore is a sovereign island nation and city-state in maritime Southeast Asia. It borders the Strait of Malacca to the west, the Singapore Strait to the south, the South China Sea to the east, and the Straits of Johor to the north about one degree north of the equator, off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula.

The country’s territory consists of one main island, 63 satellite islands and islets, and one outlying islet. Since the country gained independence, extensive land reclamation projects have increased the combined area of these islands by 25%. It has the world’s third highest population density. Singapore has four official languages because of its multicultural population and recognition of the need to respect the major ethnic groups’ cultural identities: Mandarin, English, Malay, and Tamil. Numerous public services are only available in English, as the lingua franca. Constitutional multiracialism continues to influence national education, housing, and political policies.

Singapore has been a maritime emporium known as Temasek for at least a millennium, and it has been a major component of several thalassocracy empires in succession. Stamford Raffles established Singapore as a British Empire entrepôt trading post in 1819, which marked the beginning of its modern era. Singapore became a part of the Straits Settlements and came under direct British control as part of the reorganization of Southeast Asian colonies in 1867.

Singapore was occupied by Japan in 1942, and after Japan surrendered in 1945, it was returned to British control as a separate crown colony. In 1959, Singapore became self-governing, and in 1963, it joined Malaya, North Borneo, and Sarawak in the new federation of Malaysia. Differences in ideologies, most notably the perception that the egalitarian political ideology of “Malaysian Malaysia,” led by Lee Kuan Yew, was encroaching on the other constituent entities of Malaysia at the expense of the Bumiputera and the policies of Ketuanan Melayu, eventually resulted in Singapore’s expulsion from the federation two years later. In 1965, Singapore became an independent nation.

The nation rapidly developed to become one of the Four Asian Tigers based on international trade and economic globalization, integrating itself within the global economy through free trade with minimal to no trade barriers or tariffs, export-oriented industrialization, and the large accumulation of received foreign direct investments, foreign-exchange reserves, and assets held by sovereign wealth funds. This was done after the nation experienced turbulent early years while lacking natural resources and a hinterland. It has the second-highest GDP per capita (PPP) in the world and ranks tied for 11th on the UN Human Development Index.

Singapore is the only country in Asia with a AAA sovereign credit rating from all major rating agencies, despite being known as a tax haven. It has consistently been ranked as one of the most expensive cities to live in for expatriates and foreign workers despite being major aviation, financial, and maritime shipping hub. Singapore ranks highly on important social indicators like quality of life, healthcare, housing, infrastructure, education, and personal safety, with an 88% homeownership rate. Singaporeans have a life expectancy that ranks among the highest in the world, the fastest Internet connection speeds, the lowest rates of infant mortality, and the lowest levels of corruption in the world.

Singapore’s legal system is based on common law and is a unitary parliamentary republic with a Westminster system of unicameral parliamentary government. Even though the country is a democracy with multiple parties and free elections, the People’s Action Party (PAP) government has significant influence over politics and society. With 83 of the 104 seats in Parliament as of the 2020 election, the People’s Action Party (PAP) has ruled the country continuously since full internal self-government was achieved in 1959. The Workers’ Party (WP) and the Progress Singapore Party (PSP) hold the remaining seats.

Singapore is the headquarters of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Secretariat and the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) Secretariat, as well as the city that hosts numerous international conferences and events. It was one of the five founding members of ASEAN. Singapore is also a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, the East Asia Summit, and the Non-Aligned Movement.
