Candelaria, officially the Municipality of Candelaria, is a 3rd class municipality in the province of Zambales, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 30,263 people.
During the pre-Spanish era, the area of Candelaria was an unsettled forest. The Spanish East Indies government made it a Sitio of Masinloc, one of the oldest towns of Zambales. Sambal settlers from other parts of Masinloc, who found Candelaria an ideal location to live, played an important role in creating Candelaria as a separate town in 1870.
The name of the town could have come from the name of the wife of the first Alcalde Mayor, who named the town after her as a birthday gift. Candelaria is also the Spanish word for Candlemas, and the Virgin of Candelaria is a Marian title popular in the Hispanic world.
Candelaria is 42 kilometers (26 mi) from the capital town of Iba. It is nestled at the foot of the Zambales Mountains in the east and lies along the coastline of the South China Sea in the west, with a total land area of 33,359 hectares (82,430 acres), making it the third-largest town in terms of land area in Zambales. This municipality is known for Uacon Lake, the cleanest lake in Central Luzon, and for its numerous beach resorts.
Candelaria is politically subdivided into 16 barangays.

Before 1885, in its western part, the main barangays of Candelária, in particular, were part of the municipalities of Taguan, Kanatihan and Massin, while Malabanban, Mangilag and Sta. Catalina in the east was under the jurisdiction of the village of Saryaya.
Pastor Don Ciriaco Nadres, local head of Barangay Massin and his wife in secret. Doña Baltazara Bustamante, with the support of Don Simeon Nadres and his wife Doña Everista Ona, Don Justo Argao, Don Elino de Gala, Don Apolinario Gonzales, Don Tomas Cabuñag, Don Ignacio de Ramos, Don Domingo de Alday, Don Tomas Regidor, Don Juan del Valle, fathers Ambrocio Salazar, fathers Buenaventura Cedeño and fathers Hipolito Martinez proposed the establishment of independent governments in these Barangays. They became known as the founding family of the city.
This request was granted by General Gobernadore Domingo Moriones y Murillo. It was declared an independent city on December 26, 1878 and has since been known as Candelária. Its boundaries were defined by a treaty signed by prominent leaders of the founding families of Thiang, Saraya and Candelaria.
The King of Spain, His Majesty Alfonso XII, finally approved the creation of Candelaria as an independent city on 5 August 1879. After the Spanish-American War of 1898, it became clear that Spain had ceded its former Philippine colonies to the United States with the Treaty of Paris, and that US forces had established a US colonial government on the island. Were busy doing In 1899, the initial conflict between the Filipinos and the Americans escalated. A global war broke out and in 1902 the general hostility against the Americans ended. However, the aftermath of the war prompts Candelaria to search for the city of Saraya.
But the innovative spirit of its founders did not fade on the battlefield. In 1908, after almost seven years of independent existence, Candelaria was able to stand on its own two feet. It was a tier four municipality at the time.
Even as the fighting progressed, the colonial government established by the United States in the Philippines launched a peace campaign that became known as the “tug-of-war policy”. This policy allows for a significant degree of self-government, introduces social reforms and implements economic development plans. During this time the city has made great progress. Many taverns and buildings were built, and trade and industry developed until the Japanese invasion. When the Japanese occupied the Philippines during World War II, Candelaria’s growth regressed.
On June 6, 1946, Candelaria was liberated against the Imperial Japanese Army.
The municipality of Candelaria is recognized as the second largest industrial center in the province after Lucena City, and is now a first-class municipality. It has the highest number of dried coconut plants and oil mills among the municipalities of Quizun Province.
