Costa Maya is a small sightseer region in the megacity of Othón P. Blanco in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, is the only state bounded by the Caribbean Sea to its east. This megacity is close to Chetumal ( capital of the state) on the border with Belize. The area was generally uninhabited but has been growing fleetly since the construction of a large pier to accommodate voyage vessels. Costa Maya is also the name of a branch near the vill of Mahahual. The sand extends from Xcalak in the south to the southern border of Sian Ka’an in the north, a distance of roughly 100 kilometers (62 mi).
Xcalak is roughly 60 kilometers (37 mi) south of the Costa Maya voyage harborage, and the fishing vill of Mahahual is only about 3 kilometers (1.9 mi) down. Voyage vessels can fluently be seen from the vill. Mahahual has soft beach strands, lawn thatched palapas, and a coral reef a short distance off- reinforcement called Banco Chinchorro, as well as several bars, caffs, and shops. A new development called New Mahahual is being created directly inland from the harborage. When vessels are in harborage, the vill is busy with voyage passengers.
Costa Maya’s harborage has a new and ultramodern sightseer shopping boardwalk. The center has a central galleria with saltwater pools and’ swim-up style bars. There are several jewelry stores and numerous small shops dealing with ubiquitous remembrance particulars. It’s generally open only to voyage boat passengers.
Costa Maya is the closest harborage of access to numerous of the lower-known Mayan remains in the Yucatan including Chacchoben and Kohunlich. These spots are mainly lower shoveled than the better-known conglomerations of Tulum and Coba to the north; Chichen Itza and Uxmal in Yucatan.
The harborage sustained heavy damage due to Hurricane Dean in August 2007. This included the wharf designed for voyage vessels. Holland America’s Westerdam was the first voyage boat to return to the harborage since Hurricane Dean on October 31, 2008.
Explore the Costa Maya and Mahahual in Mexico with us through photos and videos. Where is Costa Maya? Arrived at Puerto Costa Maya for the first time in January 2018 on a family cruise. We were a little worried about this port and the surrounding area at first. because it is still a port “growing” and not as established as other ports such as Cozumel. We spent some time in the port of Costa Maya and also went to the nearby village of Mahahual, Mexico. We had a great time and can’t wait to go back. Below is a diary of our experience, including some important things we learned (like how to pronounce “Mahahual”) to ensure the safety of visitors to this growing destination. We learned to pronounce “Mahwal” My wife and I had a great chat with a local vendor. He told about the region and how he and his brother were fishermen and local artisans. He was kind enough to tell us how Mahahual was pronounced and explained that it was pronounced “Ma-ha-wal”. “It looks like it’s from Hawaii, but it’s not. It is very special, he said. I agree and I love that I know how it’s pronounced now! Mahahual is a village on the Costa Maya in the municipality of Othon P. Blanco on the Caribbean Sea coast of the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. Previously a fishing village, it is now a rapidly developing tourist center. The name of Mahahual possibly could come from the word “Mahahua”, it is a medium-sized tree, native to tropical America. The village of Mahahual is only about 3 kilometers (1.9 mi) away from the Costa Maya cruise port, and cruise ships can easily be seen from the village. Mahahual has soft sand beaches, grass-thatched palapas, and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef that runs along the coast. Many hotels, bars, restaurants, and shops can be found in this quaint tourist town. In 2010, Mahahual had a population of 920. Mahahual is to become a larger tourist center with an airport and a large dock for cruise ships. A new development called New Mahahual is being created directly inland from the port. When ships are in port, the village is busy with cruise passengers. Mayor Obed Durón Gomez was shot and killed by an unknown assailant while en route to Xcalak on 6 April 2020. An introduction to the port of Costa Maya, Mexico This was our first time in the port of Costa Maya, but not the first time in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, located on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. The Costa Maya lies south-southwest of the famous coastal town of Cozumel. This area is a popular tourist destination and is prone to storms during the summer hurricane season. Our trip was at the end of January so we were protected from the storm during the tour, but even in the low season, the weather may be different. The port is modern and serves as a center of activity for visitors arriving on cruise ships. The port itself can hold up to three cruise lines at a time, and the Mexican government has big plans for the area, not just cruise ship tourists. Passengers enter the port area from the northeast and most of the pier is in the southwest of the port. The safety of moving from ship to port and vice versa was very low during our trip in 2018, but I expect it to improve as the port grows. The Costa Maya port does not have the authentic Mexican charm, but the nearby town of Mahahual has it. What to do in Costa Maya, Mexico? The Port of Costa Maya was built specifically for cruise ship passengers, and it shows. There is a lot to do in the port and a lot more coming in and out of the port. Mexico is known for its bars and the Costa Maya will not disappoint you. There are five bars in the harbor area on this delivery: What are some restaurants in Costa Maya? (And what about their margaritas? There are seven restaurants on the Costa Maya (many with full bar service). From this post the restaurants are in port: Stop at V4 Port. And what, okay? In the cantina Latina. This restaurant and bar had indoor and outdoor seating with great views of the pool located inside the harbor. Puerto Costa Maya – My family walks through the ‘streets’ of the port. What is shopping in Costa Maya? Shopping in Costa Maya is good and growing too. There are many small and medium-sized shops in the port area. You can buy everything from local souvenirs to art, clothes, jewelry, chocolates and more. We usually avoid the typical shops with tourist traps, but we really liked the Kakaw chocolate factory and the mini-museum. We found everyone who worked there to be very friendly. They do not force sales at all and even offer free samples! You can check them out as they are one of the many flavors of chocolate they offer for sale. Our by far favorite and favorite seller on the Costa Maya was the spray painter Julián Botero. Mr. Botero hid in the corner by the poolside sunbed beside the tub. He worked hard to create his art whenever we passed and whenever there was a crowd watching him while he worked. We ended up buying two prints from him, and for only $25 (at the moment), the price is also a bargain. We gave Mr. Bother a few extra dollars for his work, and we hope to see him return to port. What means of transport are available in the Costa Maya? Leaving the port of Costa Maya to get to the local village of Mahul, Mexico is possible and actually quite easy. We don’t always leave the port (or ship), but since this was our first visit, we decided we needed to see the city. We paid only $ 3 per person for the shuttle from the port to the city. Shuttles are trailers towed by pickup trucks with a capacity of about 20 people. Our tour involved about 10 passengers. The road from the port to the city takes only a few minutes and is very bumpy due to the road. I would say that this mode of transport is not the safest, but we never really felt in danger. It is also important to know that the shuttle will not pick you up on your way back to the port. You need to take a taxi into town to get back to the port. It is not recommended to walk between the port of Costa Maya and the city of Mahahual. Mahahual Mexico – A local salesman shows us pearl thrush. Is the city of Mahahual, Mexico safe for tourists? Yes, I feel that Mahahual is as safe as any other port city in Mexico. That said, it’s important to take precautions when traveling to almost anywhere you’re unfamiliar with. Don’t make yourself a target, be kind to the locals, leave your valuables on board, and don’t be afraid to spend some money. In fact, people living in and around cities want to have a good reputation in order to attract more visitors. We found everyone we met and spoke to at Mahawali to be very friendly and low-key about what they needed to sell. Is it worth a trip to the city of Mahahual? Yes, if you are in the Costa Maya Port. And you do not have a travel plan, a trip to Mahahual is worth the time and a little money to move. My wife doesn’t like cruise ports and sometimes stays on the ship. I was a little surprised when I was able to persuade him to come with me to town. We walked all over town and the beach and took a taxi back. When we boarded the ship again, he told me that this was his favorite port we had ever been to. Mahahual Mexico – Family selfie. Mahahual Mexico – My wife and son took a walk around town. Is it safe to leave the port of Costa Maya in Mahahual, Mexico? In short: No. I forbid you to walk between the port of Costa Maya and Mahahual. I wouldn’t say that the danger is related to who or what you can find on the road. The danger lies on the road because there really is no safe place. The road is very bumpy and each direction is considered two lanes and cars often pass scooters or other slow-moving vehicles. There are no footpaths and some parts of the route are relatively dense on the sides of the road.
