The Tour(s)plus agglomeration community was created by provincial decree on December 30, 1991. The city of Tours is composed of nine municipalities: Tours, Joué-lès-Tours, La Riche, Chambray-lès-Tours, Saint-Cyr-sur-Loire, Fondettes, Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, Notre Dame d’Oé, and Saint-Avertin. On January 1, 2001, five new towns joined Tours Plus: Luynes, La Membrolle-sur-Choisille, Mettray, Saint-Étienne-de-Chigny, and Saint-Genouph.

While the agglomeration community has fourteen municipalities, on October 1, 2009, Tour(s)plus collects the community tourist tax, tourism having been added to the list of competencies of the agglomeration community. The product of the tax is entirely intended for the tourist promotion of the territory.

On January 1, 2010, the 5 municipalities of the former Confluence Community of Municipalities joined Tour(s)plus, which now has nineteen municipalities. On January 1, 2012, three municipalities of the Community of Municipalities of Vouvrillon (Chanceaux-sur-Choisille, Parçay-Meslay and Rochecorbon) which had asked to join Tour(s)plus, following the deliberations of each of the municipal councils taken on December 16, 2010, are finally maintained within the community of communes of Vouvrillon, the draft plan of the intercommunity having been frozen by the prefect of Indre-et-Loire, Jean-François Delage. However, on January 1, 2014, these three municipalities joined Tour(s)plus, which includes 22 municipalities in total for a total population of 292,268 inhabitants in 20153.

After becoming an urban community on January 1, 2017, “Tour(s)plus” becomes “Tours Métropole Val de Loire” by a decree of March 20, 2017

Tour(s)plus began collecting the community tourist tax on October 1, 2009, adding tourism to the agglomeration community’s list of competencies, despite the fact that the agglomeration community consists of fourteen municipalities. The sole purpose of the tax revenue is to promote the region as a tourist destination.

By decree of March 20, 2017, “Tour(s)plus” became an urban community on January 1, 2017, and was renamed “Tours Métropole Val de Loire.” Tourism and Culture Tourism occupies an irreplaceable position in the city’s economy thanks to a number of advantages, including the following: Medieval architectural heritage includes Saint-Gatien’s Gothic cathedral, which is located in the middle of the Loire Valley, close to many Renaissance castles and buildings, an old place of worship with Saint-Martin’s basilica, and a bike path through the Loire. In addition, the municipality is working on a plan to invest in the business and festival tourism sector in order to take advantage of the city’s proximity to Paris (large equipment, international events, assistance in the installation of luxurious hotels).

Tours are home to a regionally oriented conservatory.
